Support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
By OPCTW Staff

Rochelle Shoretz founded Sharsheret to connect young Jewish women fighting breast cancer following her own diagnosis at age 28. In November 2001, while undergoing chemotherapy treatment, Ms. Shoretz founded Sharsheret, a national not-for-profit organization providing support and resources for young Jewish women facing breast cancer.

In response to the women it serves, Sharsheret has developed three core programs:

The Link Program, a peer support network connecting young women newly diagnosed or at high risk of developing breast cancer with others who share similar diagnoses and experiences by telephone and online on the Sharsheret Forum.

Education and Outreach Programs, including health care symposia addressing the concerns of Jewish women and younger women facing breast cancer, Sharsheret Supports, a national model for local support groups, and Family Focus, a program for caregivers and family members.

Quality of Life Programs, including the Busy Box for children with a parent facing breast cancer, Best Face Forward to address the cosmetic side effects of treatment, Empower, for single women facing breast cancer, Genetics for Life to focus on concerns and issues relating to hereditary breast cancer, and Embrace, a support program for women living with advanced breast cancer.

Sharsheret’s Link Program pairs women who are newly diagnosed with volunteers who can share their personal and medical experiences. The organization also presents medical symposia on subjects of interest to young women facing breast cancer. As Executive Director of Sharsheret from 2001-2006, Ms. Shoretz lectured about breast cancer before audiences across the country.

Although Sharsheret’s offices are located in Hackensack, New Jersey, our network is nationwide. Because Sharsheret is not a face-to-face support group, young women from across the country can participate in the telephone-based Link Program.

Sharsheret’s programs and services are supported by individual contributions, corporate donations, and foundation grants.

Donations in honor or in memory of a loved one can be made by clicking here, over the telephone by calling (866) 474-2774, or by mail to P.O. Box 3245, Teaneck, New Jersey 07666. Sharsheret is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.
